FAR says research focus in cropping sector has shifted

The Foundation for Arable Research (FAR) says the cropping industry has turned a corner and is now more focused on sustainable farming and value added products.

Farmers have renewed their support for FAR's work, voting to continue paying levies on their crops for another six years to fund its research.

Chief executive Nick Pyke outlined FAR's research strategy to farmers, scientists and government representatives on Thursday.

He says there's been a dramatic shift of focus within the industry and in the early years a lot of the work focused on productivity by increasing yields and reducing costs.

Mr Pyke says now there's been a shift to the sustainability of the farming system and adding value - how higher value products can be grown on farms, what those products are and how farmers can get the best out of their crops.

He says 80% of farmers voted to continue funding FAR in a recent referendum, the highest level of support it's had since it started in 1995.
