Honey production was down last season, despite an increase in hives and beekeepers across the country.
About 9000 tonnes of honey was produced in the 2010-11 season, 3000 tonnes less than the previous season.
Federated Farmers says cold and wet weather contributed to the drop, along with fewer wild bees due to the varroa mite which has troubled the industry since 2000.
Bee Industry chairman John Hartnell says the price of honey has increased because of the drop, which in turn has lead to more hives and registered beekeepers across the country.
However, he says that has not yet translated to more honey, but the current season is looking brighter.
