The Ministry of Agriculture & Forestry says Australian subterranean termites discovered on a residential property in Nelson, have finally been eradicated.
The termites were identified in January 2006 and were eliminated by February the following year.
Since then, the site has been monitored. Because there has been no further sign of activity, MAF has now declared the termite has been eradicated there.
MAF says an insect growth regulator had to be imported, following approval from the Environmental Risk Management Authority, for use in bait stations.
MAF is now managing three other outbreaks of the same type of termite, two in Auckland and one in Nelson.
