Tests on the water supply to Hokitika on the West Coast have found no traces of 1080 poison from an aerial drop during a possum control operation.

Three samples were taken within 48 hours of a recent aerial drop of the poison in the Kokatahi area south east of the town.

West Coast Animal Health Board spokesperson Imogen Squires says over the past 20 years more than 2500 water samples have been tested following aerial 1080 operations.

She says not one sample of drinking water has been found to be contaminated by the poison.

Ms Squires says the use of advanced GPS technology allows contractors to keep to extremely accurate flight paths.
