New crime fighting plan outlined

The Government has outlined a new plan to fight organised crime. It includes information sharing and co-operation between domestic agencies and international counterparts.

As well as strengthening the fight against criminal networks, Police Minister Judith Collins says the plan places a stronger focus on disrupting the money trail underpinning the offending.

Ms Collins says organised criminal groups are increasingly turning to cyber and financial crimes such as identity theft and money laundering.

She says Government agencies would step up their efforts to confiscate the proceeds of crime, and work more closely with the financial sector.

Ms Collins says agencies often target and deal with the same people and sharing information would enhance that work.

She says the changes would be introduced as legislation next year if National is re-elected at the general election in November.
