That's about $80 million more than the Crown has paid to other major iwi, such as Ngai Tahu.

But Mr Jones says the signs are that the Crown is ready to deal generously with New Zealand's largest and poorest tribe.

He says its leaders should stop fighting and start negotiating.

Mr Jones says $250 million could return $13 million a year in interest to Ngapuhi, and that could help its many struggling marae and young people.

He says further delays in settling mean Ngapuhi will lose millions in potential income.

Ngapuhi hapu are opposed to a single settlement for Ngapuhi, and want the crown to deal with five hapu collectives, not the runanga-controlled board the Government has endorsed.
