PM to visit Myanmar

12:02 pm on 8 November 2012

Prime Minister John Key has confirmed he will visit Myanmar later this month, following a summit of East Asia leaders in Cambodia.

Mr Key will be the first New Zealand Prime Minister to visit the country, which is also known as Burma.

He will meet both President Thein Sein and Opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

Mr Key says there has been historic political and economic reform in Myanmar over the past year and he would like to see those developments first hand.

He says New Zealand is committed to building connections with Myanmar, and supporting its reintegration with the rest of the world.
