Widening of consumer law recommended

5:15 pm on 2 October 2012

The parliamentary select committee considering new consumer laws is recommending that the Consumers Guarantees Act cover all transactions between traders and consumers.

That would include online auctions and competitive tenders.

The committee says the act should also be changed to better protect people receiving courier goods, making the sender responsible for the goods up to the point of delivery.

Another recommendation is to give the Commerce Commission compulsory interview powers when it's investigating serious breaches of the Fair Trading Act.
