A man accused of stealing $6.782 million from Westpac bank has been remanded in custody following a court appearance on Thursday.

Hui Gao, also known as Leo Gao, faces 16 charges of theft and two of money laundering.

Mr Gao allegedly stole the money in 2009 after a $10 million overdraft was mistakenly loaded into his bank account.

The 30-year-old appeared in Rotorua District Court for a bail hearing and was remanded in custody to reappear on 23 January. He did not enter a plea.

Mr Gao was arrested in Hong Kong in September last year and returned to New Zealand with detectives in December.
