Christchurch mayor looks to 2022 Commonwealth Games

A newly rebuilt Christchurch City could host the 2022 Commonwealth Games, if the city's mayor gets his way.

Following the success of the Rugby World Cup, Bob Parker is suggesting the country put a bid in for the Commonwealth games.

Mr Parker says Christchurch could host the opening and closing ceremonies, along with the track, field and swimming events.

He says by that time, the quake-damaged city will be rebuilt and it would be a wonderful chance to show it off to the world.

Christchurch hosted the Commonwealth Games in 1974.
