Some drivers not heeding basic safety message - police

5:03 pm on 4 October 2011

Police in Waikato say some drivers still believe that messages about driving safely do not apply to them.

Inspector Leo Tooman says two examples of drivers flouting the law at the weekend are particularly concerning.

He says a man in his 20s was stopped on State Highway 2 at Maramarua, travelling at 177km/h in a 100km/h zone on Saturday.

A woman was stopped in Hamilton early on Sunday and found to be three times over the legal breath-alcohol limit.

Three young children were in the car and it was the third time the woman had been caught.

The road toll in Waikato is 41, six more than for the same period last year. Twelve deaths have been attributed to speed and alcohol.
