Gang members stopped from entering NZ

9:57 pm on 3 July 2011

Police say they have stopped 11 Hells Angels members coming into the country as part of an operation to disrupt the gang's 50th anniversary celebrations in Auckland this weekend.

Detective Inspector Grant Wormald says the gang is an organised crime network that presents a serious risk to the community.

He says they have long criminal records and he doesn't want them strengthening ties with their New Zealand counterparts.

Mr Wormald says the police have been working with Customs and Australian authorities in the run up to the event.

Extra police patrolled the suburb of Mount Eden where the celebrations were taking place on Saturday night but they say the only tickets issued were for driving and vehicle offences.
