Church carpark death second in six years

11:28 am on 15 January 2011

A Wellington Coroner is recommending changes to a Hutt Valley church carpark, after two children were run over there in almost identical accidents, six years apart.

A 14-month-old girl was run over in the Stokes Valley Assembly of God Church carpark in October 2002, and five-year-old Levi Falemoe died in October 2008 .

The young boy had just been dropped off, and no-one noticed him return to the vehicle shortly before it was moved by the driver.

Coroner Ian Smith says limited changes were made following the earlier death, but engineers should now be asked to design and implement a safe carpark for the church.

He says any further injuries or the death of another child there would be totally unacceptable and could lead to charges being laid.
