NZ ready to help flood-stricken Queensland

4:10 pm on 2 January 2011

Civil Defence says New Zealand authorities are standing by to help flood-stricken Queensland if required and lines of communication are open around the clock.

About 20 towns and cities in the Australian state have been swamped so far in the worst flooding for 50 years.

Emergency teams from New South Wales and Victoria have been called in to help, but there has been no request for New Zealand assistance to date.

A spokesperson for Civil Defence Minister John Carter says his office is not aware of any formal request for help, but often government departments of the two countries liaise directly with each other.
