Northland police are appealing for information about a man who has been missing in Waipoua Forest, north of Dargaville, for nearly a week.

Troy Adrian Liddington, 36, was last seen on Wednesday, leaving a house near the Department of Conservation headquarters in the kauri forest.

The police say Mr Liddington told his brother he was going for a walk but when he failed to return by Friday, his family called police.

A search on Friday and Saturday failed to find him, but family members stayed on to keep looking for him.

The police say Mr Liddington, from Whangaparaoa, is Maori, of heavy build, and was wearing boots, black pants and a blue top.

They say he was not well-prepared for walking in the forest, but is known to be a good bushman and able to survive.
