166 HNZ tenancies terminated because of fraud

Housing New Zealand has terminated 166 tenancies because tenants dishonestly obtained a state house or taxpayer subsidised rent.

Housing Minister Phil Heatley told Parliament that most Housing New Zealand tenants appreciate their home and abide by the rules.

But he says a small minority are committed to accessing homes and subsidies they do not need.

Mr Heatley says over the past two years, Housing New Zealand investigators have identified $6.3 million worth of rent tenants were not entitled to.

He says more than 130 cases of tenant related fraud have been before the courts, a ten-fold increase from two years ago.
