Early childhood sector unhappy about review

9:28 am on 8 October 2010

Some in the early childhood education sector say they are shocked by the announcement of a Government review.

Education Minister Anne Tolley has announced an eight-person independent taskforce to review spending and practices within early childhood education.

Groups such as the Childcare Assocation and New Zealand Kindergartens say the review seems unnecessary and they worry the Government is looking to save money by cutting standards.

Waikato University early childhood lecturer Linda Mitchell questions the need for a taskforce for a sector she says is working well.

But Barnado's say it's only right that the Government considers whether it's investing its money properly.

Chief executive Murray Edridge says he has great confidence in the people appointed to the taskforce.
