Six overseas scholarships for junior doctors

Health Workforce New Zealand has awarded six bonded scholarships that enable junior doctors to train or study overseas.

They have been awarded under the Advanced Trainee Scheme, which aims to improve the training and career development of senior medical trainees and encourage them to build their careers in New Zealand.

Each scholarship provides about $20,000 for advanced study overseas.

In return, trainees are bonded to work in areas where a particular need for their skills is expected.

Health Workforce New Zealand says the first six scholarships have gone to trainees in Northland, Waikato and Canterbury.

It says scholarships are to be available for up to 50 trainees in any one year.
