Silver Ferns level series against Australia

9:35 am on 3 September 2010

The Silver Ferns have beaten Australia 59 to 40 in the second test in Wellington to level the series 1-1.

Beaten 48-43 in the first test, the Silver Ferns bounced back in the best way possible, dominating throughout the 19-goal win at the TSB Arena on Thursday night.

Up by five goals at the end of the first quarter, even the introduction of the 6ft 5in defender Susan Fuhrmann could not slow the home side.

New Zealand extended their lead to 31-19 at halftime, with Silver Ferns coach Ruth Aitken having the luxury of benching Irene Van Dyk and replacing her with Daneka Wipiiti.

Wipiiti and fellow shooter Maria Tutaia, who sank a series of long-range shots throughout the night, gelled immediately and New Zealand were up by 15 points going into the last quarter.

They extended that lead to 19 at full time, as Australia continued to make uncharacterisitc errors throughout the match.

The third and deciding test is in Auckland on Sunday.
