Two Waikato iwi a step closer to settlement

7:02 pm on 18 June 2010

Two south Waikato iwi are a step closer towards settling their historic Treaty claims.

On Sunday, representatives from the Office of Treaty Settlements will sign terms of negotiation with Ngati Haua and Ngati Koroki Kahukura at Pohara Pa near Putaruru.

A member of Ngati Koroki Kahukura's negotiating team, Willie Te Aho, says the iwi want control of resources in their rohe.

Mr Te Aho told Waatea News that Ngati Koroki Kahukura also want some acknowledgment of how the use of its stretch of the Waikato River for power generation has affected the iwi culturally and economically.
