Super-city Maori liaison plan backed by iwi

Two Auckland iwi are backing the idea of a Maori adviser for the new super-city mayor, saying it would be better than nothing.

Mayoral candidate John Banks has suggested the role of iwi liaison as part of his Maori policy, claiming it would ensure a voice for tangata whenua.

Mr Banks told Morning Report that iwi wield a great deal of influence, both economically and culturally, and the role will ensure they have a voice in crucial decision-making.

The idea of a paid adviser falls well short of separate Maori seats wanted by iwi, but Auckland's largest iwi, Ngati Whatua, says anything that gets Maori closer to where the decisions are made is a good thing.

Tainui co-chair Tukuroirangi Morgan says Maori have to take what opportunities they can.

Both iwi say they will keep pushing for dedicated Maori seats on the new Auckland Council.
