Trainer acquitted on horse-stealing charges

A Canterbury horse trainer cleared of stealing five horses from her former employer says she should never have been taken to court.

Nicola Subritzky says she took the horses last August because she thought they were neglected and feared they would die.

The Christchurch District Court was told that the owners of four of the horses listed in the charges, Paul and Debra Thistoll, were bankrupt and that their company Burnham Bloodstock, was in receivership.

Acquitting Ms Subritsky of both charges she faced in the Christchurch District Court, Judge Jane Farish said there was no evidence that the Thistolls owned the horses. Ms Subritzky was clearly concerned about the horses' welfare, the judge said, and didn't act dishonestly.
