Thames patients fall ill with stomach bug

6:25 pm on 13 January 2010

A highly contagious stomach bug is affecting the Thames region, prompting a request for extra vigilance in the community.

The bug, which causes vomiting and diarrhoea, has affected five patients, two relatives and seven staff members at Thames Hospital.

Waikato District Health Board spokesperson Mary Anne Gill says the bug has not spread widely through the hospital due to the infection control measures put in place on Wednesday.

However, staff want visitors to take extra precautions with hand washing before entering the hospital, and people who have been ill are advised not to visit.

No wards have been closed.

Ms Gill says the bug is not uncommon at this time of year, with people being less fastidious about hygiene when camping.
