Coromandel residents against gold mining in area

3:46 pm on 24 August 2009

Residents of a small Coromandel coastal community are trying to prevent a gold mining company from drilling in the area.

Onemana residents have held community meetings on Sunday and Monday to voice their concerns about the Newmont gold mining company mining for gold near the town.

Green List MP Catherine Delahunty says the residents are worried about the potential effects of a mining project on the town.

She says they are worried about the impact on the environment, as well as property values, and do not want their town to turn into a gold mine.

Ms Delahunty says residents should lobby their MP and let Newmont know its actions are not welcome.
