Slip forces Napier residents from home

8:15 pm on 30 June 2009

Steady rain throughout Hawke's Bay on Tuesday has caused slips on a major highway and forced residents out of their Napier home.

Civil Defence controller Angela Reid says residents of one house on Hospital Hill are spending the night in a hotel after topsoil from the house above slid into the back of their home.

Ms Reid says the Earthquake Commission will check the house on Wednesday before the owners are allowed back in.

Meanwhile, motorists travelling on State Highway 2 between Napier and Wairoa are advised to be extremely cautious following slips in the area.

The Transport Agency says crews have been working hard to clear the road of debris and fallen trees.

The highway is open on Tuesday but the road remains slippery in parts.
