A tramper carrying just a tin of beans for food has been found in the Silver Peaks area north of Dunedin.
The 25-year-old Austrian tourist was reported missing at 6pm on Wednesday.
Police in Dunedin say he was found at 12.30am on Thursday on the track he had set out on.
They say he was dressed inappropriately for the conditions in street shoes, jeans, a polar fleece and a poncho.
The man was equipped with just a can of baked beans and a sleeping bag.
Police say 35 search and rescue volunteers were involved in the operation.
