Transpower is to investigate a major power outage in and around Tauranga.
It is believed a lightning strike affecting several substations just after 5.20pm on Saturday caused the outage to about 74,000 homes.
The fault was fixed within two hours, but it took a few hours to fully restore supplies.
Transpower spokesperson Cynthia Brophy says an investigation is expected to start on Sunday and a report should be produced within a couple of days.
The region suffered thunderstorms throughout Saturday afternoon.
