The theft of a mobility scooter from a home in Tauranga would have required significant effort, police say.
The white scooter was taken from the Glambourne Way home some time between Friday night and Saturday morning.
The key wasn't taken with the scooter, so whoever took it would have had to lift it and carry it away.
Police said the scooter was the only means of transport for its elderly owner.
Tauranga police are keen to hear from anyone who might have information about the theft.
"Anyone who saw anything suspicious, or who may know anything about the item's whereabouts or the people involved, is urged to get in touch," Senior Sergeant Eddie Lyttle said.
