4.9-magnitude earthquake rattles lower North Island

The weekend has got off to a shaky start for people on the east coast of the lower North Island, with a 4.9-magnitude quake recorded this evening.

It hit at 6.20pm and has ben classified as 'strong'.

The quake was centered within 5km of Porangahau and struck at a depth of 17km, according to GeoNet.

GeoNet received more than 1500 reports of shaking within 10 minutes.
