Two earthquakes hit the South Island overnight.
A 4.9 magnitude quake struck at 2.35am.
The quake, rated 'severe' by Geonet, was centred 25km south-east of Arthurs Pass and was relatively shallow at 8km.
About an hour later, a 4.3 magnitude shake struck 15km east of Seddon.
The second quake was at a depth of 15km.
