Christchurch police say a suspicious fire has caused extensive damage to a new station due to open early next year.
Police say someone got into the top level of the Sydenham station on Colombo Street on Saturday night and a workman discovered the fire still smouldering on Sunday morning
Police say the damage is likely to delay the opening of the station.
The existing Sydenham station on Stanley Street was also the subject of vandalism in 1991 when two nail bombs destroyed the front of the building.
