Air NZ bikini video draws protests

A petition started in Australia against an Air New Zealand safety video featuring bikini-clad models has attracted more than 2500 signatures.

The video was produced to coincide with the 50th anniversary of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition.

Air NZ safety videos have previously featured characters from The Hobbit, and also staff dressed only in body paint.

It has been playing on flights since February but Melbourne traveller Natasha Young didn't see it until last week.

She says she was so outraged by the video she started a petition on website Change.org to get the airline to stop playing it.

Ms Young says it makes a mockery of safety, and sparked lewd remarks and upset parents of young children in-flight.

Air New Zealand says the video is in the process of being phased out.

It is not the first time Air New Zealand has attracted attention for its in-flight safety video.

In 2011 cabin crew and pilots were featured only in body paint during the in-flight safety message.
