A baby critically injured in a road crash in King Country has died.

The girl was believed to have been sitting unrestrained on her mother's lap when the car they were in crossed the centre line and crashed into a bank near Kopaki on State Highway 4 on Monday.

She was airlifted to Starship Hospital in Auckland, but died overnight.

Four adults and a three-year-old child also in the vehicle were not seriously injured.

Police say investigators are looking at several factors, including the car's speed, two bald tyres and the fact six people were in a five-seat hatchback at the time of the crash.
