No charges over surgery death

No criminal charges will be laid over the death of a man while undergoing surgery at Wairau Hospital in Blenheim two years ago.

The surgeon operating on the patient when he died in May 2012 was Michael Parry, who resigned from the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board last year during an investigation by the Medical Council.

The Coroner referred the case to the police for investigation, and they had conducted what they described as a lengthy and thorough investigation.

A police spokesperson on Wednesday said the investigation file had been independently reviewed by the Tasman Crown Solicitor, who had confirmed the evidence gathered did not reach the threshold for prosecution.

The matter has been referred back to the Coroner.
