Land Information Minister Maurice Williamson said the models are of commercial buildings within the four avenues and include demolished buildings and those still standing.

Mr Williamson said models of existing buildings will also give context to architects designing new ones, meaning means planned buildings can be included in visualisations of the future city.

Land Information New Zealand chief executive Peter Mersi says the models will help retain a digital snapshot of the lost heritage in central Christchurch.

The models have been released under an open license, making them available to anyone through the Christchurch City Council or open source website http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/
