Eight people on a diving expedition in the Hauraki Gulf have been rescued after their boat began taking on water nearly 10 kilometres from shore.
Auckland Westpac rescue helicopter crew member Mark Cannell said those on board issued a mayday call on Saturday afternoon after the motor cut out and the boat was swamped off Little Barrier Island.
Mr Cannell said the helicopter found the boat and was able to direct another boat in the area to the scene. The coastguard then arrived and took over towing duties.
He said all those on board were wearing a combination of wetsuits and lifejackets and they did not need medical help.
