A Hamilton woman has been charged with attempted murder after a man was run over in the city on Sunday.

The 43-year-old man received serious injuries after being struck and then run over by a car outside a shop in the suburb of Melville. He is in a stable condition in Waikato Hospital.

After the man was struck, a motorist drove their car into the Waikato River, but was rescued.

A 44-year-old woman first appeared in the Hamilton District Court Wednesday afternoon and was granted interim name suppression.

She appeared in the High Court on Thursday but did not enter a plea.

Justice Katz remanded her in custody to undergo a mental health assessment. The woman will be back in court Friday.
