Central District's top police officer is being investigated over his comments that a 10-year-old rape victim was a "willing" participant in her abuse.

A police spokesperson today confirmed an employment investigation had been launched into the actions of Central District police commander Superintendent Russell Gibson, who said in a letter to the rapist's wife that the girl was a "willing" participant in her sexual abuse.

"The comments are in no way reflective of (the) police's commitment to supporting victims of sexual offending and holding those responsible for such crimes to account," the police said in a statement.

The police were committed to supporting the victims of sexual offending and holding those responsible for such crimes to account, the statement said.
