Police keeping up the pressure on drink-driving

11:59 am on 20 December 2009

After a nationwide blitz on drink-driving, the police say there will be no let-up, and pressure will be maintained in the run-up to Christmas and throughout the holiday period.

Over the past five years, between 41 and 51 people have died on the roads each December, and alcohol was a factor in many of those crashes.

National road policing manager Paula Rose says the extra road checkpoints introduced during recent operations will be maintained into next month.

She says the presence of the police is having an effect, with many motorists telling officers that they've been breath-tested three or four times in the past few weeks.

The police will also be looking for people driving under the influence of drugs.

During Friday night's blitz 40,000 people were stopped and breath-tested; 194 were found to be driving while over the limit, which led to 32 arrests and the impounding of 23 vehicles.
