Race organisers and police say new alcohol restrictions helped clean up Christchurch's Cup Day.

Drunken revelry at the event, which features the New Zealand Trotting Cup, has earned it a notorious reputation in recent years.

Police say they did not need to arrest anyone at the raceway on Tuesday and St John Ambulance staff did not treat any alcohol-related injuries.

Addington Raceway chief executive Shane Gloury says the new measures this year included restricting liquor purchases to two drinks at a time and banning people from bringing their own alcohol into the venue.
