Drugs not only option to fight depression - researcher

An Auckland University researcher who led a review of the use of antidepressants says there are ways other than drugs with which people can combat depression.

Professor Bruce Arroll says the international study shows that antidepressants are directly effective for up to 15% of people.

Another 50% feel better on them due to the placebo effect.

Professor Arroll, head of general practice and primary healthcare at the university, says there are other options for people who find anti-depressants ineffective.

He says exercise, cognitive behavioural therapy and talking therapies, keeping gratitude diaries and some forms of meditation can be beneficial for those with depression, and to help prevent it from recurring.
