The 8,000 tickets available to the public for the Wellington leg of the International Rugby Sevens tournament sold out in three minutes on Tuesday.
Last year the tickets, which range from $45 to $175, sold out in 10 minutes.
The tournament's general manager Steve Walters says with improvements in online ticketing technology, the tickets went in record time when they were made available on Tuesday morning.
The two-day tournament at Westpac Stadium will be held from 5 February.
