Prime Minister John Key has delivered a list of the top 10 reasons to visit New Zealand, during a pre-recording of the Late Show with David Letterman in the United States.

Mr Key has been in New York as part of the United Nations General Assembly meetings.

The CBS programme was aired in the United States on Thursday and will screen in New Zealand on Prime Television.

After his appearance, Mr Key revealed a few of the reasons he read out for the programme.

"It's a convenient 20-hour flight away, if you go in the next 30 days I'll pick you up at the airport personally, and, unlike the rest of the world, we like Americans," he said.

Mr Key says David Letterman made a joke at New Zealand's expense about how far away it is, before saying it was his favourite country that he had never visited.

The Prime Minister says the exposure for New Zealand will be huge, as the programme has up to four million viewers in the US.

Earlier in the day, Mr Key visited the New York Stock Exchange - ringing the closing bell on a session that saw the Dow Jones lose 44 points.
