MPs assured over police use of taser guns

Police Commissioner Howard Broad has assured MPs that an incident in which a Queensland man died after being tasered up to 28 times would not happen in New Zealand.

Mr Broad appeared before Parliament's law and order select committee on Wednesday with four officers who showed the full range of defensive weapons police use, including the taser stun gun.

Green MP Keith Locke questioned Mr Broad about the year-long trial of tasers in New Zealand, which showed they were fired multiple times in more than a third of incidents.

Mr Broad said that led to a police policy banning multiple firings, and he says the tasers used in New Zealand have cameras that record exactly how they are used.
