High school locked down after gunman confronts students

7:44 pm on 28 May 2009

A South Auckland high school was locked down on Thursday afternoon after students were confronted by a man with a gun.

Police say three students were standing outside Homai Bowling Club in Manurewa shortly before 3pm when two men, one of whom had a gun, pulled up in a green Subaru.

Area Commander Alan Shearer says the car was driven after the students as they ran into Memorial Park, before the passenger got out, wielding what looked like a rifle.

Mr Shearer says the students ran back to Manurewa High School, which was locked down for 45 minutes.

A police helicopter searched the area, but neither the vehicle nor its occupants have been found.
