A man is in a stable condition after surviving a 13-storey fall from an apartment in central Auckland.
Tom Stilwell, who is in his 20s, fell from the top floor of the Volt Apartments on Queen Street about 2am on Sunday after a night out drinking.
Police and witnesses say Mr Stilwell tried to climb into his apartment from neighbour Geraldine Bautista's balcony above when he fell, landing on the roof of a two-storey building. Ms Bautista said she tried to grab him but he slipped from her grasp.
She has spoken to Mr Stilwell's flatmates, who said he is awake and talking and laughing in Auckland Hospital.
One flatmate, Beth Goodwin, said he is in a lot of pain with broken bones in his chest, neck and wrists, as well as damage to internal organs.
Miss Goodwin said Mr Stilwell does not remember the fall and is lucky to have survived. She said he has sworn off drinking.
