Three Hamilton houses were evacuated on Tuesday as firefighters dealt with a gas leak.
Up to two metres of piping on Pembroke Street was damaged when contractors were trying to dig a bore hole just before 1pm on Tuesday.
The Fire Service said firefighters used water to disperse a cloud of gas.
The intersection of Pembroke Street and Lake Street, near Waikato Hospital, was cordoned off.
Eight residents from three homes were evacuated while repairs were made.
