Almost 2 million census forums were completed online in the March census.
Statistics Minister Maurice Williamson says the figure represents about 35% of all forms filled out.
At its peak on 5 March, the online system was handling 130,000 forms an hour.
Mr Williamson says no final decisions have been made about the next census, but it is clear the online option will play a major part.
