Churches pressure PM to save Bioethics Council

7:08 am on 27 March 2009

A group of church leaders is putting pressure on Prime Minister John Key to save the Bioethics Council. The Government is doing away with the nine-member council and four staff, saving $1.3 million in the process.

The churches say the morals and ethics of euthanasia, animal to human transplants, and biotechnology need to be fully debated and not ignored by the Government.

Reverend Barbara Peddie, of the Interchurch Bioethics Council, says the move is prioritising money over people.

The churches have written to several MPs as well as Mr Key in an effort to reverse the cuts.

Reverend Peddie says she has not yet had a reply from Mr Key.
