West Coast operation clears court fines

6:21 pm on 19 November 2012

West Coast police have collected tens of thousands of dollars as part of a crackdown on outstanding fines and reparation payments.

The joint operation with the Justice Department and Child, Youth and Family took place on Friday and Saturday evenings and involved seizing property or getting on-the-spot payments from people owing money.

Police cleared about $50,000 in fines and $10,000 in reparation payments and seized 13 cars.

South Island West Coast Area Commander, Inspector John Canning, says the cars were taken under warrants for seizure and will be sold to pay for the fines.

Mr Canning says six people who strongly objected were arrested for disorder.

Similar operations are planned for Nelson and Marlborough before Christmas.
